Do Not Give Up During Job Search

I have a family ring my father game me when I turned 18.  It is a gold ring my Dad wore on his pinky finger.  That never seemed right to me so I wear it on my right hand ring finger.  I have always worn it with pride and never feared losing it due to it being an fairly tight fit.

However, as life goes, I took the ring off and placed it on the band of my watch when staying at a high rise hotel in San Diego.

Well, wouldn’t you know it?  I wake up in the morning and step out on the beautiful balcony to take in the ocean view.  I begin my morning routine by undoing my watch and placing it on my wrist.  As I do so, the glint of gold catches my eye as my Dad’s ring tumbles about 8 stories in slow motion down toward the ground.

Now before I continue let me say that this ring has some history.  It had been passed down for two generations prior to my Dad getting it.  So, despite the tight fit, there was some pressure there.

You can imagine the panic.  You can also imagine me sprinting down the stairs and launching out the front door of the hotel. Trying to get my bearings.  Where was my room again?

As I approach the drop zone, my heart drops as I come upon a rather large and very dirty koi pond.  I was crushed upon realizing that my family history was “now swimming with the fishes”.  I had to leave the hotel without the ring, head down. As I walked toward the parking lot I passed a man with waders on – he was heading toward the pond.  I kid you not, he looked just like Bill Murray in Caddyshack.

I was done for . . . game over.

When in transition and looking for a job there are often days or weeks where the outlook does not look good.  Your last few leads dried up a few days ago.  No new calls have come in and you start to feel like the best days tapping your network are behind you.

In this situation, you have to believe that good things are on the way.  And there is no risk in doing so. Unless this belief has you thinking that good things come to those who wait.  In reality, good things come to those who work incredibly hard to prepare for a meet up with the right circumstances.

So how did the story finish?

My Dad’s ring rests safely on my finger today.  The result of a head groundskeeper who worked tirelessly, plodding through floating fish droppings in search of a guest’s gold ring.

How he found it, I’ll never know.  But I think the memory of that success stayed with me.  If a gold ring can be pulled from the clutches of Davey Jones’ locker, well . . .

I guess anything is possible, right?

This is so true. We have to remember to stay positive and keep motivated but it is very difficult to do so during these times. I know for me personally it helps me to go to networking events (both for job seekers and ones with employed personnel). These events make me feel like I am making progress and they also lift my spirits as I sincerely enjoy being with people. I hope this helps others during these trying times.
    Best regards,
