How To Create A Sales Funnel For Job Search

Ask any good sales person and they will tell you about the value of a sales funnel.  The idea being that you need to keep developing new potential clients.  So that you always have a certain number of  prospects at some point in the selling process.

Because nothing happens quickly in this world.  The lead that you start pursuing today may not deliver value for months or years.

And in job search you have a very similar situation.  As much as we’d love our process to move along quickly, most of the time the process is more like a long and winding road.

So you need to be pursuing multiple job options.  All the time.

But how do you do that?

You create a job search funnel.  From the day you begin your job search, you manage your prospects like a sales person.  And you do it visually with the help of the funnel.  You update it weekly.

It looks like this:

job search, funnel, interviews, strategy

What I love about the funnel is that it keeps you focused on where each target company is in the funnel and reminds you to:

  1. keep looking for prospects to add to the top of the funnel (new target companies)
  2. work on moving warm leads through the funnel

The Job Search Funnel template is now available on the free job seeker downloads page.

If you like this idea and want to get a filled-out sample from me, make a comment below and I will send you one.

Have a great week.

Hi Tim! This is a very innovative strategy to apply to a job search. I used this same technique in my last position when qualifying prospects and am sure it will provide the focus my current job search is lacking. I am interested in checking out a sample of the funnel and look forward to implementing it right away!

    Thanks, Zac

Tim, you are 100% right, it’s necessary to keep many active job opportunities in play at the same time. Your job opportunity funnel provides an “at a glance” view of the opportunities and how they are progressing. It’s a great tool. I plan to use the funnel strategy in my search. Thanks for the great idea.

    Tim,

Very interesting. I have used sales funnels (or pipelines) in my previous life. This is a very compelling adaptation. Do you have a spreadsheet or some other sample model that you use? I’d like to see it.
