Introducing The New “Everything You Wanted To Know” About LinkedIn

Some of us think we know a little bit about LinkedIn.  We have more than enough connections (or so we think).  We have a few recommendations from former bosses and co-workers.  We’ve joined LinkedIn groups to find classmates or look for a new job.  And we’re actively meeting new people both in and outside our target geography.

Done?  After all, knowing how to use 15% of a computer’s operating system works for most of us, right?

Not so fast.  Remember now, we are talking about networking.  For business or for a new job.  Both critical things that contribute to the family’s income stream.

So now that we’ve established that LinkedIn is more than just casual social networking, it’s time to get to know this site and its capabilities.  In a way that works.

So I’d like to introduce you to a new book from fellow Orange County resident and networking pal, Neal Schaffer.  Neal has found a way, despite a very busy life, to write a fantastic new book on LinkedIn.

Neal writes the WindMill Networking™ blog and is becoming a well-known speaker on networking via social media.  His new linkedin, social media, job search, career networking book is called “Understanding, Leveraging & Maximizing LinkedIn.  An Unofficial, Step-By-Step Guide to Creating & Implementing Your LinkedIn Brand”.

Whether you are new to LinkedIn or have become a seasoned pro, the book is a great source of ideas on what LinkedIn can do for your career and your social life. Assuming you have one of each . . .

So what can you find inside?  Here are some of the chapters that will interest anyone looking for their next great role:

  • How to write a great profile
  • How to write a great invitation
  • How to create your own LinkedIn group
  • How to research companies
  • What is a LION and should I be one?
  • How do I actively grow my LinkedIn network?

And, of course, much more.

If you are wondering if the book is worth purchasing, ask yourself if you feel 100% confident on LinkedIn.  Are you missing leads or job opportunities because your profile is not well written.  Or incomplete.

Hey, you can always add it to your Christmas list, right?  Even better, add it to your Amazon Wish List.  Here’s the link to Neal’s LinkedIn book if you are ready.

And, if you are feeling lucky, I’ll be giving away three copies of Neal’s new book – each signed by the author (Thanks Neal!) – on the Tim’s Strategy Facebook Fan Page on Tuesday and Wednesday before Thanksgiving.

To enter, click the link above to visit and become a fan.  Look on the wall for the link and make a comment.  Winners will be chosen randomly.  Deadline is 5:00 PM Pacific Time on Wednesday (11/25/09).

Good luck and good networking!

Tim, I’m so glad to have connected with you through Neal Schaffer today, and thanks for writing this great review about his book. Ironically, Neal was my 700th connection on LinkedIn. And it just happened TODAY! I was delighted to discover it was Neal who got me there.
I already visited Amazon to take a look at the preview, and Neal’s warm, caring personality absolutely radiates off each page. I can’t wait to read this book, and I’m so very grateful for LinkedIn!
    Happy Thanksgiving to you!

    Tim,
When I became a member of MENG (Marketing Executives Networking Group) earlier this year, I connected with another MENG memebr, Jan Wallen. She is another Linkedin guru and has written a book entitled “Mastering LinkedIn in Seven Days or Less”. I have dutifully followed her advice and I have to say that my results to date have not turned up any consulting leads or assignments. No doubt I do could devote more time and effort to LinkedIn. But before I do, I’m curious if you know of Jan and her book and what makes Neal’s approach unique and presumably more effective.
    Thanks and regards,

    Hi Mark -
Thanks for your note. I have not read Jan’s book, but have heard good things about it via MENG as well. For me the value in Neal’s book comes from his work to dig up all the capabilities of linkedIn that most aren’t aware of and don’t use. And his explaining of each capability in a way that all can understand. It is a very thorough summary.
I think like any social media site used for job search, LinkedIn cannot do it all. To maximize LinkedIn is a great start. It provides confidence knowing that you are turning every stone. But your next job is as likely to come from local, in-person networking as much as it is from LinkedIn.
Success in today’s job search, from my perspective, comes from a full court press utilizing social media, local relationships and good old fashioned hard work. And having yourself physically and psychologically prepared for the day when the right job opportunity comes along . . . .
