Job Search – Why Going It Alone Won’t Work, Part 1

job search networking

Traditional job searchers have a list of resources that they rely upon for that next great job. Generally the list looks like this:

1. Professional recruiters

Kind of a short list, right? Well, it is kind of unfair to suggest there are people out there who are this one-dimensional. But I’ve met a number of people who see recruiters as at least 50% of their search effort. That is the first question they ask me:

Do you know of any good recruiters?

As I’ve said, recruiters are an important part of the search strategy but most recruiters will tell you that only about 15% of the nation’s jobs go through them. In Tim’s Strategy, the recruiter plate is valuable, it just shouldn’t be spun very often. Once you get your information to a recruiter you can request an in-person meeting (not easy to get) and send a monthly update to stay on their radar, but that’s about it. You are either a good fit for one of their jobs – or not.

So is focusing on recruiters a going it alone strategy? YES. More modern job searchers have a list that expands appropriately to new technologies like:

1. Professional recruiters
2. Job Search Engines
3. Networking Tools like Linkedin®

So is this list an example of going it alone? YES. If this is your job search strategy, you are missing out on an incredible number of opportunities. If this is you, see this post about creating a job search network.
