Job Seeker. Your House Is Haunted. Get Out!
I don’t care whether you believe it or not, but your house is likely haunted. Or at the very least, it is not a safe place to be during the day.
So whether you hear a raspy voice screaming “get out!” or not, please leave. Now.
Why am I so interested in getting you out of that house?
Because it is a lousy place to network with other people.
- Your coffee stinks
- Your office chair smells
- Your dog has bad breath
Oh, and, your computer is not your friend. It, in fact, can be an enemy if not used right.
This came up the other night at a presentation. I was talking about an article I wrote for the Orange County Register a while back. In the article, I shared a story about a job seeker who had been out of work for over a year. During the interview for the article, I asked how much networking she’d been doing. Her answer “what do you mean?” told me everything I needed to know.
She had not been networking. Not even a little bit. She was a prisoner in her own home. And she had the key to get out in her right front pocket.
As I told this story, someone in the front row was nodding their head. And after I stopped speaking I knew he and I would speak about his own version of home arrest. We did. And it’s never good news.
Here’s what happens. As your job search progresses without successful results, you begin to retreat back to a safer place. A place where you can quietly search for new jobs, send emails and hang out in LinkedIn groups.
While the real work of job search is happening outside your four walls.
So here’s my quick message for you today:
You should be out of your house more than you are in it during job search.
Whatever your reason for retreating back into your home office, you need to get yourself out in the world. Let the sun shine on you. And let people see your smiling face.
So. Get out. Now.
