The Must-Have Resume Companion. The SoloSheet™
Everybody looking for a job has a resume. Great. You are now equal with everyone else in the world.
Some resumes are better than others and it’s important that yours clearly outlines the value that a company can expect to find in you. And one that excites an HR or hiring manager about the fit and promise your background suggests.
But how do you begin to differentiate yourself while providing a tangible tool for others to truly know how they can help you?
The answer is a relative of the “one-sheet“. A term that originated in the movie business, a “one-sheet” is a single page document used to sell an idea, a concept or in your case, yourself. The key is that everything you need to know is right there on one page. A movie poster is the quintessential one-sheet. What else do you need to know?
So the idea of one piece of paper to sell something isn’t new. And, to be honest, the idea of a one-pager to present your candidacy for jobs isn’t new either. There are a number of good templates out there.
What amazes me is why so few people that I meet have one. Is it an awareness issue? Are job seekers stuck in the past? Is it laziness?
Perhaps it is a mix of all these issues. Regardless, I have a format that I adjusted for my own use during a 2007 search that I wanted to share today.
It is a free downloadable template. Available now on the downloads page.
I call this a “resume companion”. Why? Because it includes many of the key pieces of information from the resume without the burden of too much data and with the addition of very tangible and actionable data.
So who wins when a job seeker has a tool like the SoloSheet™ ?
- Job seekers have a focused and very tangible pitch sheet – perfect for the quick exchanges common at many structured networking events.
- Recruiters have a simpler format from which to make quick decisions as to the fit with their client listings.
- Fellow job seekers can now better help those they network with based on the additional data. Data that makes lining up new friends with new jobs much easier!
Now, let’s go through each section of the SoloSheet™ to describe how it is built differently from a resume.
NAME AND POSITIONING STATEMENT
The key difference here is the positioning statement. Whether you have this on your resume or not, it is critical to quickly and well position yourself in a crowded market. Keep it short and make sure it says key things that make you unique.
SUMMARY
The summary is a short written paragraph that tells the story of your positioning statement. It can prove your position by providing credible evidence along with a solid reason why (or two).
WORK PHILOSOPHY
This statement is one that I added. It tells how I approach my work to achieve the desired results. If you have built up a structured thought process or methodology to achieve success, introduce it here.
WORK HISTORY
Unlike your resume where the details of each position provide more granular evidence of your skill and experience, here you are simply providing a chronological history. One that tracks company (industry), title (promotions), and dates (loyal vs. opportunistic).
CAREER OBJECTIVE
Here’s another difference from the resume (at least mine). The SoloSheet™ includes a career objective because it is critical that your network know what you are looking for in your next role. It should include title, industry, geography, company size and any other data that would help people assist you. The more specific the better.
NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS
These are critical. Think of the top 4 or 5 from your resume for your past 2-3 jobs. The ones that, when combined, show the breadth and impact that you have on an organization.
KEY COMPETENCIES
This can be a bulleted list or a written list separated by commas. These are 8-10 specific skills that allow someone to line you up with specific job descriptions.
TARGET ORGANIZATIONS AND GEOGRAPHY
This is perhaps the most important aspect of the SoloSheet™ when used at a networking event. When fellow job seekers know what companies you are specifically targeting, it is much easier for them to help. You may be remembered as “the marketing person looking at Pepsi and Heinz”.
So . . .
In an ideal world, there are 10 people walking out of a networking event with your SoloSheet™. It is marked up, key words are circled and a few stars are drawn next to a few of your target organizations.
Your network now has a solid method to keep track of you, a tangible way to remember who you are and, importantly, has an actionable list of organizations where you’d like to work.
Easy for your network = results for you.
If you’d like to see an example of how one was filled out, write a comment below and I’ll send you mine from 2007. Be sure to leave your e-mail address in the form!

Yo Tim,
I like the idea, especially as a tool to let your network know.
Many friends are emailing me their CVs, and in some cases it’s clear what their objective is. Yet many CVs are a lot stronger on record (i.e. past) than objective (i.e. current interests).Thank you!
Thank you & I’d like to see the 2007 one…and the 2009 one should you plan to update it

Seems like the old resume formats are based on ways people used to read, consume and file information. We all get afraid to vary from the norm and so we sacrifice our ability to communicate clearly and position with strength. I have used some aspects of your thinking in my current resume. It’s the old form vs. function debate …
Send me your filled-out template?
Tim Tyrell-Smith March 27, 2009 @ 2:48 pm
Hi Sharon – Happy to send – just need an e-mail!
Nora Su Alvarado March 28, 2009 @ 5:43 am
Thanks for providing the template and the great ideas, Tim! I think this looks to be a tool that helps to get down all the details in a good format. I’d sure be interested in taking a look at one that is filled out. Thanks again for the tips and strategy!
Leticia March 28, 2009 @ 11:56 am
Hi Tim, I heard the mentioning of a solosheet before, but honestly, did not pay too much attention to it.
The amount of diferent things you hear that you “must” have for a successful job search these days can be overwhelming. I paid attention now (to you), and agree that I probably need to have one.
Would love to see yours.
Thank you.
Dave March 28, 2009 @ 1:10 pm
Hi Tim,
I’d have to agree with many of the above posts…a good way to capture resume/experience in a consise format. I’ve heard this referenced to as a ‘personal marketing plan’ a lot lately and have a general idea of what to include, etc. If possible, would like to see your most recent example too. dbrossmer@comcast.net
Dave
Ps. Thanks for the knowledge sharing!
Tim Tyrell-Smith March 28, 2009 @ 2:29 pm

Alexis Fincher March 29, 2009 @ 5:36 am
Tim,
Thanks for sharing. You identified a lot of great tips for the resume and how job searching and networking is taking place. I am familiar with a “one-page” concept also called a “Marketing Plan” as a tool for networking as well. Would love to see your 2007 example or a current example if you have one?
Tim Tyrell-Smith March 29, 2009 @ 8:49 am
Thanks Alexis – my sample is on the way to you. A mini marketing plan is another good name for it, yes. Good luck!
Shona Brown March 29, 2009 @ 12:47 pm
I think the one page snapshot/summary is a great idea. Once I’d done that, I could recycle and actually complete profiles such as my LinkedIn that is hanging at 40%! Please send me your sample.
Rodrigo Marques Barbosa March 29, 2009 @ 2:07 pm
Hi Tim,
Great article! A proof that less is more.
I had two experiences in the past that endorse your post: a seasoned headhunter back in 1997 was surprised and questioned me about why I had’n sent him a one-page resume. Since then I always kept that concept in mind. Secondly, I learned a lot about one-page reports and so during the time I was with Honda Motor in Brazil. It is quite an experience to observe and learn from the nipponic way of doing things. They have an amazing capacity of being concise yet very profound in their presentations. It is all about selling an idea in one page only as a result of deep researches and analysis.
By the way, please send me your template. I will work on getting mine ready right away.
Thank you!
Lainie G. March 29, 2009 @ 3:06 pm
The concept is similar to the verbal 90-second elevator speech except this is a snapshot on paper . . . I’m interested, would you please send The Solo Sheet to me. Thank you.
Tim Tyrell-Smith March 29, 2009 @ 3:36 pm
@Lainie – Your is on the way. Yes, could also be used for your elevator outline.
@Rodrigo – Yes, as the resumes come pouring in to a recruiter they would appreciate a quicker look at you – especially if it is your best examples. Then you can follow up with a more complete history as necessary.
@Shona – Need your e-mail address . . . happy to send mine! You can send me an e-mail direct vis my “about page” on the blog.
So glad that everyone is finding this tool helpful!
Catherine March 29, 2009 @ 11:11 pm

Really like this idea… especially as a freelance tool. Thanks!
Wayne John-Electrical Career Specialists March 30, 2009 @ 11:34 am
Hi Tim-
Wayne John here from our old Indian Guides group.
I like your idea of the solo sheet. Where would you suggest placing the education information-near the top as some do or after the work history?
I’m trying to determine the value of placing specific target/dream companies there at the bottom. I would agree with placing the dream areas for possible relocation is good, but what value do you believe in placing company names on the actual resume? Truth be told, I have never seen that, but am open to the idea.
Being a solo recruiter, I see many resumes every day and few jump out. Some I see have a body where the total word count is twenty and others six pages long.
Perhaps it’s time to rethink resume writing. Thanks for your ideas, Tim.
Anneli Spielman March 30, 2009 @ 12:47 pm
I like this idea a lot – it makes sense to make it as easy as possible for others to help you find a job! Please send your 2007 solo sheet. Thanks!

Thanks – and yep, I’d like a copy too!
Teresa March 30, 2009 @ 3:15 pm
Hi Tim,
looks like a great way to highlight the important stuff and dispense with the fluff. Please send me your completed sheet.

Eileen Morrissey March 30, 2009 @ 3:53 pm
Hi Tim,
Thanks so much for sharing. I can’t tell you how many times I have re-written my resume! This format makes so much sense. Now a days hiring managers don’t have the time to review a two-page resume.
Please send me your solosheet when you have a chance.
Thanks!
Kstrelow@wi.rr.com March 30, 2009 @ 3:55 pm
I was downsized in October and am not having success with my current three page resume as it may have too much technical content. I would very much appreciate a copy of the solo sheet that is completed so I have an example. I believe this may help me in my job search.

Hey Craig – Great to hear you are having success with your marketing plan. Cool that you are trying something new!
Tim Tyrell-Smith March 30, 2009 @ 7:38 pm
Wayne -
Great to hear from you!
Since the SoloSheet is primarily a networking tool, I did not include education. For most people I know, education is on the resume for hiring credibility more than immediate fit with a job. Because it is a “one-sheet” some things need to be sacrificed. I chose education. Others may choose something else . . .
Again, since this is not a resume replacement (more of a companion), the target companies are there to tell your network how to remember you and to provide them with more data so they can send you jobs that fit your objectives.
Tim Tyrell-Smith March 30, 2009 @ 7:51 pm
Terrie – Great question. If you are new to town, it is still important to have very clear job objectives (perception is as important as reality sometimes). Even if you are not 100% sure, find a few local companies in your industry and include them on the target list. Worst case, you look prepared and by having a target list, make it easy for people to help you. Over the next few weeks, you can add or update your list. How to find companies? One of my old-fashioned favorites is to go for a drive or ride your bike (the green/healthy option) around town – it’s amazing the brand names you see. Get a list from your local Chamber of Commerce or network with others – many have a company list by key city.
Tim Tyrell-Smith March 30, 2009 @ 7:58 pm
DRussell – Will do – just need an e-mail address! All – use the comment form to hide your e-mail address from the world or replace the “@” sign with “at” – I’ll get it!
Tom Wilkens March 30, 2009 @ 8:20 pm
Hi Tim:
Please send your SoloSheet. I like the concept and intend to use it at an upcoming neworking event.
I also like the article on consulting as I am considering that path as well.

Hi Tim,
Would you email me your solosheet as well?
Thanks in advance!
MC Gibson March 31, 2009 @ 7:17 am
Intriguing although I think the objective is more limiting than beneficial. The more specific the more easily a hiring manager can discount you.
I would like to see your 2007 version so please send.
Thanks.
Tim Tyrell-Smith March 31, 2009 @ 7:31 am
Hi Mindy – Thanks for your feedback. Again, the objective is mainly there for networking and i think it’s crucial that your network know what you are targeting. I agree it is less valuable when using it with companies and do not have an objective on my regular resume for just the reason you stated. Thanks!
Denise March 31, 2009 @ 8:29 am

Tim-
Thank you for sharing your valuable insights and tools. I like the concept of including current objectives and not just focusing on past achievements.
Rich March 31, 2009 @ 3:48 pm
Interesting, my “short sheet” looks much like your SoloSheet minus the Work Philosophy section. The last time I used it, nearly 10 years ago, it was a hit and Work Philosophy was not real an in vogue idea, but sure seems to be a good idea now, and something I will include.
I have been hired twice since the last time I used the short sheet without ever having to deliver paper…
thanx for the thoughts
Tim Tyrell-Smith March 31, 2009 @ 5:47 pm
Thanks Rich. Like I said in the post, there are a number of good templates out there. Sounds like yours has worked well for you . . .

Tim, great article. Everyone should have this. I tend to look for the short, sweet and to the point responses. Glad to see there is a format for this way of thinking:). Also supports the concept of ‘what is your brand’. Can you send me the solosheet. Thanks.
soartosuccess@earthlink.net April 1, 2009 @ 6:48 pm

Tim Tyrell-Smith April 1, 2009 @ 9:12 pm
Thanks so much to everyone for your interest in this article and the SoloSheet. If you have not received my sample, please make sure you left your e-mail in the comment form!
@Jerry – Short, sweet and to the point is correct! Especially as folks are competing with so many others. You have to stand out and be uniquely interesting to your target companies . . .
Tim Tyrell-Smith April 1, 2009 @ 9:21 pm
@Gloria – I’m not a big promoter of markedly different versions. For me, the real value here is in telling your network about your specific job objectives. If you have more than one industry, you can include a second one on the same SoloSheet. Beyond that, the risk is you look unsure and can potentially confuse your network over time. But, at the end of the day, create what you feel comfortable with!
Robert Weitzenhofer April 2, 2009 @ 7:36 am
Tim,
You are a one-man outplacement service! I had not been aware of a tool such as the “Solo Sheet” but after seeing your template I think this is an invaluable tool which I would like to use. Please send a completed example which will help me develop each section more relevantly.

Interesting new idea, at least in my 45 years I’ve never heard it applied to a job search. Please send me a copy.

would love to see the example! very intriguing
Deborah Mourey April 13, 2009 @ 11:40 am
I like this idea, it’s similar to a bio – I have a couple of those, which are one page narratives that describe a person’s background.
this idea is different, to the point (can review in the standard 7 to 10 seconds). I am interested in your 2007 version. Thanks very much.

Lori Goodlander April 13, 2009 @ 12:02 pm

Bob Smack April 13, 2009 @ 12:48 pm
Tim – goes to show and prove that we all have 2 ears and 1 mouth for a reason, that is, find fewer words to sell ourselves and our goods and spend more time listening, just like the SoloSheet.
Please send your example to me at bsmaracko@fuse.net. Thank you, kind sir!!

Kathleen Pringle April 13, 2009 @ 7:43 pm
Hi Tim,
Please send your solosheet — thanks! As an executive career coach I have helped hundreds of clients develop a “professional profile” (same concept as a solosheet) for networking purposes. This single document has been the the difference between getting an appt. with e-level contacts and not! Besides, who really wants to read a resume?
Tim Tyrell-Smith April 13, 2009 @ 8:55 pm
Mary. Thanks. Just need an e-mail address!
Tim Tyrell-Smith April 13, 2009 @ 9:01 pm
Thanks Bob – 2 ears, 1 mouth and fewer words. Well said! Your example is on the way!
Tim Tyrell-Smith April 13, 2009 @ 9:04 pm
Kathleen – I agree! Maybe someday we will search and hire based on a mini cv alone! Wouldn’t that be nice! Thanks for your comment and let me know your feedback!
Carol Larsen April 13, 2009 @ 9:57 pm
Hi Tim,

Amy Rubin April 14, 2009 @ 10:34 am
Hi Tim, your articles are helpful, thanks. Please do share a copy of your solo sheet. I suspect doing it will help me strengthen the core resume document as well. A question for you: what do you think of VisualCV? do you have a pros/cons list for that tool? Would welcome your thoughts.
Thanks!
Amy
Tim Tyrell-Smith April 14, 2009 @ 9:31 pm
Amy – I have not yet written about Visual CV (but it is on my list!). Overall, I think that any online tools you can use to help recruiters find you and quickly learn your strengths are worthwhile. Visual CV can be especially helpful if it allows you to better illustrate your achievements and skills (with images, pictures or other visual aids). There are some careers and industries where that can mean a lot to someone reviewing your abilities.

Can you email me a copy of your solosheet?
Ed May 2, 2009 @ 4:18 pm
Tim,
Great piece of information… Much like our evaluations where we have to fit a year of information into 16 lines — make it concise, and hard-hitting.
I’d really like to see your solosheet, as I’ve never seen one before!
Thanks!

Susan Schaffer May 6, 2009 @ 3:56 pm
Hi Tim,
I’m very interested in the Solo Sheet – could you please send me your 2007 version?
It seems that this market demands great flexibility in terms of target companies – and I’ve expanded my search significantly. Do you think it’s limiting to have a relatively small, finite list of target companies?
Thanks for this – and all the info on your site.
Tim Tyrell-Smith May 7, 2009 @ 12:12 am
Hi Susan – Happy to send it – just need an e-mail! Concerning your question, I recommend a shorter, focused list of companies for networking. Easier for people to remember and it provides good sample companies for people to use when looking at jobs. For example, you can say “Technology companies like Microsoft” instead of naming every one in the industry. Have a longer list, yes, but on your FlashCard, SoloSheet and in your 30/60 second intro speech, I recommend keeping your list shorter for more impact.
Aleesa May 7, 2009 @ 11:14 am
I’d love to see your SoloSheet – need to make one for myself tomorrow!!! Thanks Tim for all of your help!

Hi Tim,
Great idea.
A headhunter I saw recently had me prepare for the interview by taking the job description and writing bullet points on how my skills and experience matched what they were asking for. It was a big help for her, for me – and for the client.
I’ll download yours – its a great thing to have.
Thanks!

Ava June 8, 2009 @ 9:37 am
Hi Tim,
Great idea! Can I get a copy of the one you put together in 2007? Years ago I put together a matrix with topics across the top (e.g., Project Management, Training, Leadership, Process Management, etc.) and companies/dates down the left side. In the cells you can jot the names of the relevant work project so you can quickly look down the Training column and see all the work projects you did related to training — a quick way to study before an interview. I only have a hard copy or I would share with you, but you probably get the idea.
Tim Tyrell-Smith June 9, 2009 @ 11:10 am
Thanks Ava – Your copy of the SoloSheet is on the way. Thanks for sharing your idea for the interview prep spreadsheet. I like it!

Lori Nelson Brooks September 16, 2009 @ 6:57 am
Tim,
Having spent the past few hours reading your E-Book – excellent content! – I am now ready to roll up my sleeves and put together my marketing materials. If you could send me an example of your Solosheet, that would be most appreciated. What do you think about this Positioning Statement? “MOTIVATING CHAMPION FOR CHANGE AND IMPROVEMENT”.
Looking forward to putting this all together and then providing you feedback as to my progress and ultimate success!
Lori
Tim Tyrell-Smith September 17, 2009 @ 5:40 pm
Hi Lori – The SoloSheet is on the way! In terms of your positioning statement, I like the energy but would like to it be more specific to what you do. It sounds a little generic (champion, change, improvement). You want the reader to see where you fit vs. this one which is a bit of a catch-all. Good luck!
Jeff Grainger September 23, 2009 @ 9:19 am
Hi Tim
Thanks for the valuable information & tools that you have shared. I have sent a link to both of my sons who are at different stages of their career with the advice to build their network now and follow the give back advice that is so important.

thanks again,

Hi Tim,
Often I left a networking group meet with so many cards and don’t remember which person is looking for what. Recently I came across a position that would be perfect for a fellow I met a year ago at a networking meet and I didn’t remember the name although I have a lot of cards. This is really a good idea for the SoloSheet. Please email me your 2007 because I am networking actively. Thanks, Julie

Denise Sawadogo December 1, 2009 @ 10:45 am
Hi Tim,
Reading this is very timely for me. I was just working on something similar in a powerpoint template with my picture as well. I was thinking of using it in my personal marketing brochure that I’m thinking of creating. Having the one page on the front, 2 page resume inside and perhaps a cover letter type of note on the back. Let me know what you think of this. I also see the value of using just the 1-pager for networking events. Please send me yours. thanks! Denise
Tim Tyrell-Smith December 1, 2009 @ 6:57 pm
Thanks everyone for the continued requests! As long as you have included your e-mail in the form, I will gladly send out my version!
@Denise – I think the SoloSheet is more powerful as a networking and introductory tool than simlpy adding to a personal portfolio that also includes your resume. However, if it gets people to read on, then OK!
Turner December 6, 2009 @ 7:49 pm
Tim,
yes I would like to see your example please. I am considering using the SoloSheet as an alternative to my 3 page resume, which has gory technical details. My hope here would be to broaden job prospects by being more general.

Hi Tracy – Just sent it off to you. Good luck!
James Hufton May 13, 2010 @ 9:59 am
Great post. It should be noted that many professional resume writers and career centers, including Harvard Business School, does not recommend placing a Career Objective within the resume, but rather within the cover letter. As your intent may be slightly different from a traditional resume, it could work here. No recruiter or HR pro is the same, so no approach is absolute.
Tim Tyrell-Smith May 14, 2010 @ 11:41 am
Thanks for your thoughts James. I agree that a career objective does not belong in a resume. However, I think it belongs nicely in a networking bio. Since you are needing to share your specific job search objectives with your network (the main purpose for the SoloSheet), it provides tangible data to those looking to help . . .
Neil Keim May 17, 2010 @ 8:05 am
Tim,
Just want you to know that your articles are very helpful to me during my transition period. I would like to develop a Solo Sheet so if you could send me yours from 2007 I would really appreciate it? Keep up the good work.

Hi Tim,
Your blog is valuable to me since I am reworking my resume to elicit more results. I seem to have good feedback but I noticed the employers only look at the first page. So thanks for providing a different stragegy. Could you please send me an example of your SoloSheet.
Regards,
Sandra

Mary K July 2, 2010 @ 8:04 am
Tim,
This is great—I’d love to have a copy of your SoloSheet. My resume currently extends over 2 pages and my CV rolls onto 3. This is very concise and gets to the meat of the matter.
Thanks!

Claudia July 2, 2010 @ 8:11 am
Great idea in general.
Suggestion for a little refine – change the sequence of the information flow as the follows.
Name – 4-6 word positioning statement
contact info following name
Objective (what you are after)
including career, organization, geography all in one place
Competencies (what you are offering)
bullets, keywords catching eyes and hearts
Accomplishments (optional)
quantitative and action verbs
Experience (where you acquired the declared competencies and accomplishment)
list of date-position-employer
Education and Training
list of designations, degrees, relevant courses, and other professional activities
Tim Tyrell-Smith July 2, 2010 @ 8:20 am
Hi Claudia – Thank you for your suggestions. Does your version still fit on one page. That was my biggest challenge (i.e. what stays and what goes)! Appreciate your comment.
Dave Christensen July 9, 2010 @ 8:17 am
I’ve been recruiting for 13 years and resumes are often the biggest roadblock and waste of time. This format in invaluable for getting noticed by any recruiter be they independent or corporate.
Tim Tyrell-Smith July 9, 2010 @ 10:14 am
Thanks Dave – Your opinion means a lot. Thanks for that . . .
