Welcome To CONFIDENCE WEEK: Finding Your Dimmer Switch

Welcome to the first full week of January.  And as we all head into a new year and (hopefully) a new more active job market, I’m kicking off my effort with a new series.

CONFIDENCE WEEK is all about the psychology and tools to build a stronger position for yourself.  In your mind.  In the mind of your network.  And, importantly, in the mind of key decision makers who will either guide you through an interview process or quietly escort you out of the building.

So if you are not getting the RSS feed or e-mail updates, now would be a great time to do that.

Today’s first post is a pretty simple one.  Simple but powerful if you are looking for a way to add an extra bit of strength to your delivery.

I use this dimmer switch idea prior to presentations I give or prior to any interaction when I need to feel a little taller and brighter in life.

The idea wasn’t mine originally.  It came via a great career coach I’ve worked with in my past.

It struck a chord for me.  Very practical and easy to utilize in the moment.

So finding your dimmer switch is about reaching into a part of yourself that can elevate your confidence when you need it most.

How does it work?  As you walk into an interview room or as you approach the front door of the company’s headquarters.  Just prior to joining a networking conversation.  Imagine your hand reaching to your right hip, grabbing onto a dimmer switch.  And slowly begin moving that switch up your side.

As you do it, envision a light inside of you getting brighter.  Your head clearing of any other thoughts.  Except the clear understanding of your strengths and abilities that you have readied for just this purpose.

So this is a mind clearing process for me.  One that allows the naturally occurring confidence to live freely when you need it.

Now you may say: “what if that confidence isn’t there?“  Well, as that last link suggests, that can happen to anyone.  No one has it every single time.  They just don’t.  The key is preparation.  Once you are prepared for an interview and have the right mindset for networking, your mind can be free to be raised to a new, stronger place.

And, once there, “staying up” is much more of a possibility.

Nice to know about dimmer switch idea. It doesn’t take a psychologist to understand you Tim. Great!
